How Does a 3-Way Valve Work?

What Is a 3-Way Valve?

A 3-way valve is a control valve used in mechanical piping systems to direct or mix the water flow between two different lines.

These valves are especially used in the following systems:

  • underfloor heating systems
  • boiler room installations
  • chiller systems
  • HVAC systems
  • fan coil systems

Thanks to 3-way valves, the water flow in the system is controlled and the desired temperature can be set.

How Does a 3-Way Valve Work?

3-way valves have three connection points:

  • inlet line
  • outlet line
  • bypass line

The mechanism inside the valve changes the direction of the water between these three lines.

3-way valves can operate in two different ways:

1️⃣ Mixing Valve2️⃣ Diverting Valve

Mixing-Type 3-Way Valve

In the mixing type, the valve mixes water at two different temperatures.

Example:

  • boiler water → 80°C
  • return water → 40°C

The valve mixes these two water streams to create the desired temperature in the system.

This method is especially used in underfloor heating systems.

Because underfloor heating systems require a low temperature.

Diverting-Type 3-Way Valve

In the diverting type, the valve directs the water into two different lines.

Example:

  • hot water → radiator line
  • hot water → domestic hot water boiler

This type of valve is generally used in combi boiler systems.

Why Is a 3-Way Valve Used?

3-way valves are quite important for system control.

Their main functions:

  • temperature control
  • flow control
  • system safety
  • energy savings

This allows the system to operate more efficiently.

3-Way Valves in Underfloor Heating Systems

In underfloor heating systems, the boiler water temperature is generally 70 – 80°C.

However, the water temperature to be used in the underfloor heating pipes:

35 – 45°C

must be.

The 3-way valve comes into play here, mixing the hot water with the return water to achieve the appropriate temperature.

Motorized 3-Way Valves

In modern systems, 3-way valves are generally controlled by a motorized actuator.

This allows the valve to operate automatically.

The system can work together with the following equipment:

  • room thermostat
  • outdoor air sensor
  • automation system

3-Way Valve Brands

There are many quality valve brands in the mechanical installation sector.

The most commonly used brands are:

  • Danfoss 3-way valves
  • Siemens control valves
  • Honeywell valves
  • Caleffi valves
  • ESBE valves

These brands are especially widely used in HVAC systems.

Where Is a 3-Way Valve Used?

3-way valves can be used in many different systems.

The main areas of use:

  • underfloor heating systems
  • boiler rooms
  • central heating systems
  • chiller systems
  • air handling units
  • fan coil systems

In these systems, the valve provides temperature and flow control.

3-Way Valve Faults

Over time, some faults can occur in 3-way valves.

The most common problems:

  • valve sticking
  • motor failure
  • gasket wear
  • incorrect installation

These faults can reduce system performance.

How to Choose a 3-Way Valve?

The following factors should be considered when choosing the right valve:

  • valve diameter
  • flow capacity (Kv value)
  • operating pressure
  • temperature range

An incorrect valve choice can negatively affect system performance.

Conclusion

A 3-way valve is an important piece of equipment that controls the water flow in mechanical piping systems.

Thanks to these valves:

  • temperature is controlled
  • energy savings are achieved
  • system efficiency is increased.

Correct valve selection and correct installation are of great importance for system performance.
