What Is a Water Softening System?

What Is a Water Softening System?

A water softening system is a treatment system that removes calcium (Ca) and magnesium (Mg) ions from water, reducing its hardness.

Hard water can cause:

  • limescale buildup in combi boilers and boilers
  • efficiency loss in heating systems
  • clogging in the piping system
  • failures in industrial machinery

and similar problems.

That is why using a water softening device is mandatory in many systems.

What Is Water Hardness?

Water hardness refers to the amount of calcium and magnesium minerals in water.

It is usually measured in the following units:

  • ppm (mg/L)
  • French degree (°fH)
  • German degree (°dH)

Example hardness values:

HardnessValue
Soft water0 – 75 ppm
Moderately hard water75 – 150 ppm
Hard water150 – 300 ppm
Very hard water300 ppm +

Water hardness is quite high in many regions of Turkey.

How Does a Water Softening System Work?

Water softening systems operate on the ion exchange principle.

The ion exchange resin inside the system captures calcium and magnesium ions and releases sodium ions in their place.

This removes the hardness from the water.

The system consists mainly of the following components:

  • resin tank
  • salt tank
  • control valve
  • distribution system

Water Softening System Calculation Steps

Three basic parameters are considered when choosing a water softening device.

1️⃣ Daily water consumption
2️⃣ Water hardness
3️⃣ Resin capacity

1️⃣ Daily Water Consumption Calculation

First, the system's daily water consumption is determined.

Residential Use

Daily consumption per person is generally:

150 – 200 liters

Example:

For a household of 4 people:

4 × 200 liters = 800 liters/day

Industrial Use

Consumption is much higher in factories, hotels or hospitals.

Therefore, project-based calculation should be performed.

2️⃣ Water Hardness Value

The hardness value from the water analysis is used for the calculation.

Example:

Water hardness = 30 °fH

3️⃣ Resin Capacity Calculation

The capacity of water softening devices is usually expressed as m³ × °fH.

The general calculation formula is as follows:

Capacity = Daily water consumption × Hardness

Example:

Daily consumption: 0.8 m³
Hardness: 30 °fH

0.8 × 30 = 24 m³°fH

In this case, a device with a capacity of about 25 m³°fH is required.

How Is Resin Quantity Calculated?

In water softening systems, the resin quantity determines the capacity.

Generally:

ResinCapacity
25 Lsmall house
50 Lvilla
75 Lsmall business
100 L+industrial

As the resin quantity increases, so does the system capacity.

What to Consider When Choosing a Water Softening Device

The following criteria are important for choosing the right device:

Flow Capacity

The maximum water flow the device can supply.

Regeneration System

The resin is renewed with salt after a certain period.

This process is called regeneration.

Control Valve

Automatic control valves are used in modern systems.

The most commonly used valve brands:

  • Runxin
  • Fleck
  • Clack

Where Are Water Softening Systems Used?

Water softening systems have a very wide range of applications.

Main areas of use:

  • homes
  • hotels
  • hospitals
  • industrial facilities
  • boiler systems
  • laundries
  • food production facilities

A water softening device is especially critical in boiler and steam systems.

Advantages of a Water Softening System

Water softening systems provide many advantages.

Extends the Life of the Piping

Prevents limescale buildup.

Saves Energy

Heat transfer becomes more efficient.

Reduces Device Failures

Combi boilers and boilers are protected.

Cleaner Water

Soap and detergent consumption decreases.

Water Softening System Prices

Water softening device prices depend on the following factors:

  • resin quantity
  • control valve
  • tank volume
  • system capacity

Residential systems are more affordable.

Costs can be higher for industrial systems.

Conclusion

If water softening system calculation is not done correctly, the system may be insufficient.

For correct calculation:

  • daily water consumption
  • water hardness
  • resin capacity

must always be taken into account.

This way, the system works efficiently and lasts longer.
